Filing for a Life Insurance Claim
Filing the life insurance claim can seem frustrating and difficult but it can
alleviate great economic burdens for surviving (beneficiary) family members. Luckily, the
process is not really that difficult. Below is a list of steps to follow when a claim
needs to be filed:
1. Try and find the actual insurance policy. If you can, terrific, then go
to item 2. If you cannot find the physical policy, try to find the agent or
company that the insured may have used. If you still cannot find any agent
or policy information, don't give up. You may still be able to find
information on the policy by contacting the
state insurance department in
the current state or any previous states the insured may have lived in.
2. Contact the agent or company on the policy. If you only know the name of
the company they should be able to find the policy by their name and
address.
3. Ok, there will be some claim forms to fill out. The forms are simple and
an insurance company representative or agent can help you complete them.
4. The final step to take in filing the claim is to send a certified copy of
the death certificate with the claim forms to the insuring company. It
should take only a short time, anywhere from a few days to a
couple of weeks for the settlement check to be issued.
Note: Contact a tax specialist regarding any potential taxes you may need to
pay on the proceeds that are received.
